サンクスギビングの休み
おはようございます。
私のサンクスギビングの休み たのしかったです。私のおじいさんのうちに いって、りょうりを しました。トルコやマッシュポテトが すきです。先週の金曜日、ゲームを して、木のしたで べんきょうしました。先週末の土曜日、クッキーのりょうりを しました。私のルームマートは クッキーは すきじゃありませんが、パイは すきです。私は クッキーが すきです。サンクスギビングの休みは いいです。

So I did some searching for my favorite shows in Japanese versions. Here is what I found:

Couldn't find a good piece of Doctor Who in Japanese Dub but the way the subbing translates some things is interesting.

Goals 2
Looking at the past weeks of Japanese and my Pronunciation Exercises, I feel like I've come a long way. I started out with essentially no knowledge of Japanese as a language and very little knowledge of the Japanese culture. Now I can have short conversations with my classmates that don't sound like they come out of a textbook.
When we started the PE's, I could barely finish a segment that lasted 30 seconds. I tripped over words, couldn't make out the different sounds they were saying, and didn't understand even 1% of the vocabulary. Now I listen to Japanese songs and anime and occasionally I know the meaning of a phrase or word and I can mimic short sentences and easy conversations. In class it's also easier for me to understand what is being said and it is taking considerably less time to figure out the meaning of sentences.
Along the lines of pitch, I think I'm improving. Now that I can get the meanings out of sentences, I can begin to concentrate more on pitch (and rhythm too).
I've been going to the Japanese Language tables whenever I can. I think I've been at least 4 times if not 5. I haven't been going to Office hours but I really do need to go. Whenever I can, I've been using Japanese when planning my day or talking to myself. I also started keeping a rudimentary journal in Japanese.
Future Goals
-Improve speed
-Improve word pitch
-Improve Rhythm
-Build Vocabulary
Activities
-Go to Japanese Language Table every week
-Go to Office Hours at least once a week
-Keep up with my Japanese Journal and Blog. Try to use a few new words every day.
-Make post-it notes for items around me so I learn the Japanese words for them.
-Listen to at least an hour of Japanese every day.
-Shadow for at least 15 minutes a day.

So Excited for the Rest of the Week!

I know it's been a little while since I posted, but college is crazy! I'm so excited to be able to write even that small introduction. It may sound a little stilted but it's much better than I could do a week ago. I've been practicing faithfully everyday with a very cool program call "Anki." It's a wonderful flashcard system on the computer. I would suggest it for anyone who likes flashcards. I also purchased a few books on Japanese to (hopefully) supplement the class. Hopefully, I'll be this excited and energetic for the whole year. Maybe I'll check in with another post later today.

Hiragana Frenzy

こんばんは。
The week is over, it's friday, and instead of going out to the Quipfire! show, I'm in my dorm room studying hiragana. Before I knew it, the day was almost over and I have 45 hiragana memorized. I made flash cards (though I'm sure my drawings are terrible) and I've been going through them every few minutes. Right now I'm still using the mnemonics to remember them, but I feel like I'm getting closer and closer every time. Now that I know the hiragana, I think it'll be easier to prepare for the quiz and understand the different parts of the words. I'm so excited! By the time I've finished writing this, it's a new day.

Why Japanese?

こんにちは。
Some of the first television shows I watched as a kid were Japanese animes (translated into English, of course). I still enjoy watching anime and reading manga. For a good long while now, I've wanted to be able to understand the Japanese without having someone else translate it for me. So now I'm taking a Japanese class at Princeton University. Not just because of anime or manga, though. I'd like to learn more about the Japanese culture and perhaps be able to visit Japan someday. In past years, I've studied a little French and Latin, so I wanted to try something completely different as well. Those are a few of the reasons I chose to take Japanese.
Even though it has only been two days, Japanese 101 is one of my favorite classes of the day. I'm especially excited at the idea of learning the three scripts. I am finding it difficult to listen carefully and repeat phrases back accurately, but I suppose that's true for most of my classmates.
So that's all for right now.
P.S. (2:57 PM) Writing the Japanese at the top was very interesting! It was a lot simpler than I thought it would be. Though it took a little while to figure out, I enjoyed experimenting with it greatly.
